I’ve long been of the opinion that honest work deserves an honest wage. That’s why, when a consultancy, working for a major brewing corporation, came knocking on my door with a £100 bribe for thousands of pounds worth of information, I felt incensed to do something about it.
Teaming up with the guys at Peckham’s Hop Burns & Black, we managed to turn an email that generated a little ill feeling into an absolutely killer event. The store was packed to the rafters as we blasted through six very different beers. Each beer was picked for its underdog status, with all of us feeling that these beers deserved a little more time in the spotlight. We also paired each beer to a classic post punk track and recommended a spicy dish that would be ideally suited to its flavours in order to fulfil the trifecta of Hop, Burns and Black. Highlights included Beavertown's 8 Ball with Magazine's Shot by Both Sides, Boon Kriek Marriage Parfait with Cherry Bomb by the Runaways and Renaissance Stonecutter with New Zealand student anthem, Bliss from Th' Dudes.
I’ve said this a hundred times before but the real driving force behind this evening was the people. Jen, Glenn and the Hop Burns & Black team absolutely nailed it and the people who attended carried that momentum right until it was time to call it a night. We managed to raise over £500 for Mind, the mental health charity, through a combination of ticket sales and kind donations from people who couldn’t make it on the night. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Rest assured No More Heroes will be back in 2016 with a vengeance – shouting about the best beers you might just have forgotten about while spinning some amazing tunes on the turntable. Until then check out the gallery below to see what you missed out on.
